Our RootsCotton Valley Roots is a spiritually led apothecary creating season-guided self-care offerings for people being called back home to themselves — to their truth, their needs, their spirit, and the parts of themselves that have waited long enough to be tended.
HONORING THE ANCESTORS
Lucille & Clarence
Cotton Valley Roots carries the names of my maternal great-great-grandmother, Lucille Dennis Tolber Swift — a midwife in the Cotton Valley community of Tuskegee, Alabama and her son, my maternal great-great-grandfather, Clarence Swift, Sr. — a farmer in that same community. Their names are the root this work grows from and the reason every offering here beings with listening, not with a product idea.
The Return Home
Cotton Valley Roots is rooted in the belief that we are being called back home to ourselves.
Back to the body when we have become disconnected from its needs. Back to tenderness when we have learned to survive through hardness. Back to truth when we have been carrying what no longer belongs to us.
Back to spiritual alignment as we prepare to step into the purpose, peace, and possibilities that are rightfully ours.
Returning home is not about becoming perfect or rushing to fix yourself. It is the ongoing practice of listening, tending, healing, and choosing to meet yourself with care.
THE HEART OF THE WORK
Healing is cultivated through relationship…relationship with Spirit, the plants, ourselves, and one another. At Cotton Valley Roots, this relationship is where the medicine begins.
How We Work
Our work begins with listening. Before an offering is created, we enter a practice of prayer, discernment, and relationships with Spirit, our ancestors, and the plants that carry the medicine we are called to work with.
We believe the medicine has its own timing. Each offering arrives in its own season, revealing what is needed and inviting us to steward it with care.
Through spiritual herbalism, we bring together ancestral wisdom, plant knowledge, and spiritual guidance to create medicine that honors the relationship between Spirit, plants, and people.
Every herb is chosen with intention — honoring its traditional uses, the wisdom it carries, and the lessons it helps cultivate within the season of healing it is created for.
Our offerings are prepared using folk herbal methods that value relationship with the plants as much as the finished preparation. Each one is handcrafted in small batches, allowing the process to remain attentive, intentional, and rooted in ancestral practice.
Whether we are working with a plant, preparing a remedy, or creating a ritual, our practice begins in the same place…listening for what Spirit is calling forth.
Honoring the Season
Not every season asks the same thing of us. There are seasons for rest, tenderness, grief, release, protection, truth-telling, boundaries, renewal, preparation, and becoming.
Our collections respond to those calls. They are not created as random products to fill a catalog. Each one holds a message, an invitation, intentional preparations, and a way to receive and work with the medicine.
How the Work Takes Form
At Cotton Valley Roots, the work takes form in two connected ways:
-
Complete, spiritually guided self-care offerings created around the season we are being called to tend.
-
Limited preparations are made when a particular kind of support is needed in the moment. They may appear, rest, return, or be released as needed.
Both are rooted in the same intention: to support your return home to yourself.
Meet the Founder
I am Charquise Berry, the founder and maker behind Cotton Valley Roots.
Cotton Valley Roots was born through my own journey of listening, healing, spiritual awakening, and answering the call placed on my life. It has grown through my relationship with my ancestors, my spiritual team, the wisdom I have received, and the understanding that tending to ourselves is not separate from stepping into purpose
I create each offering with reverence, care, and respect for the medicine it is meant to carry. My hope is that Cotton Valley Roots gives you room to pause, hear yourself more clearly, and remember that you are worthy of the care you need.

Our offerings are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and they do not replace medical, mental-health, or emergency care.
